Middlebury Suspends Program in Egypt for the Fall Semester

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury College has suspended its study abroad program in Alexandria, Egypt, for the fall semester. “The well-being and security of our students is our top priority and we will not send students to Egypt while the situation there remains unstable and unsafe,” said Michael Geisler, Middlebury’s vice president for Language Schools, Schools Abroad, and graduate programs. The college notified students today that the program, where 25 students were enrolled for the fall, has been suspended and offered them the opportunity to attend the Middlebury School Abroad in Amman, Jordan, instead. The program in Egypt is not in session in the summer, and its spring semester ended on May 29. “International experience is an important component of our students’ education, but their safety comes first,” said Geisler.

The C.V. Starr-Middlebury Schools Abroad are located in 36 cities in 16 countries. The programs are open to students from colleges and universities across the United States, and each year a total of approximately 550 undergraduate and graduate students spend a semester or more studying in one of these cities. The programs are immersive, and enable students to live, learn and take courses in the language of their host country.
