Middlebury College Chaplain’s Office to Sponsor

“Stop the Hate” Vigil Sunday, Oct. 17

The Middlebury College chaplain’s office is sponsoring

a “Stop the Hate Vigil” at 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17 in

Mead Chapel on Hepburn Road off College Street (Route 125). The

event falls near the one-year anniversary of the kidnapping and

assault of homosexual student Matthew Shepard in Wyoming. Shepard

died as a result of the attack on Oct. 12, 1998. Two national

organizations¾Fellowship of Reconciliation and The Interfaith

Alliance¾have sponsored similar vigils across the country

in memory of both Shepard and recent school shootings such as

the one at Columbine High School in Littleton, Col. The efforts

of these groups inspired Middlebury students to organize an event

on their campus.

The event is open to the public.
