School of Hebrew to Host Conference for Language Educators
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury’s School of Hebrew, which this year celebrated its tenth anniversary, will present its 2018 Hebrew Pedagogy Seminar October 26-28 at Middlebury’s Bread Loaf campus in Ripton, Vermont.
The conference, titled “Israeli Culture in the Hebrew Classroom: Challenges, Resources and Pedagogical Tools,” will feature presentations by 20 international scholars and educators from Middlebury College, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and several other universities.
Professor Vardit Ringvald, director of the School of Hebrew, will set the stage for the conference with her opening talk on Friday evening titled, “Israeli Culture and Second Language Acquisition in the 21st Century.”
Presenters over the following few days will cover a lot of ground, exploring such wide-ranging topics as mobile-assisted language learning, Israeli cinema, reading the Hebrew map, Hebrew language learning through Israeli theatre, and “Linguistic-Visual Images of Women in Ultra-Orthodox Magazine Ads.”
On Saturday evening, Israeli author Maya Arad will speak on her new book, The Hebrew Teacher (2018). A Hebrew writer living at Stanford, California, Arad is a graduate of Tel Aviv University in classics and linguistics. She earned her PhD in linguistics from University College London. She is the author of 10 Hebrew books spanning many genres, including novels, novellas, a novel in verse, crime fiction, and non-fiction. She is the author of Another place, A foreign City (2003), Seven Moral Failings (2006), Short Story Artist (2009), Our Lady of Kazan (2015). Since 2008 she has been a writer in residence at the Taube Center for Jewish Studies at Stanford University.
