Welcome to Middlebury College’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC). The purpose of this website is to familiarize the Middlebury community with the services of the General Counsel.

Hannah Ross was appointed as Middlebury’s first General Counsel in December 2016.

As Middlebury’s chief legal officer, Hannah Ross is responsible for addressing legal issues arising out of the activities of Middlebury, which includes the undergraduate College, the Institute, Language Schools, Schools Abroad, School of the Environment, Bread Loaf School of English, and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences. Hannah also serves on President Patton’s Senior Leadership Group.

The General Counsel is charged with overseeing and partnering with all outside counsel retained on behalf of Middlebury for a variety of purposes, including for advice regarding the laws applicable to Middlebury’s operations, to solve legal problems and facilitate transactions, and to provide timely and thoughtful advice on a broad range of legal issues that help Middlebury, its faculty, and its staff fulfill their missions and meet their goals.
