James Baker Presents 1997 Fulton Lecture at Middlebury

College

James A. Baker III, who has served in senior government

positions under three United States presidents, will present the

1997 John Hamilton Fulton Lecture in the Liberal Arts at Middlebury

College. The lecture will take place at 8:15 p.m. on April 15

in Mead Chapel.

Baker, a senior partner in the Washington, D.C. law

firm of Baker & Botts, served as Secretary of State from January

1989 through August 1992 under President George Bush. He later

served as White House Chief of Staff and Senior Counselor to the

President under Bush. During the Reagan administration, he served

as Secretary of the Treasury from 1985 to 1988. As Treasury Secretary,

he was also Chairman of the President’s Economic Policy Council.

From 1981 to 1985, Baker served as White House Chief of Staff

to President Reagan. His record of public service began in 1975

as Under Secretary of Commerce under President Gerald Ford.

Long active in politics, Baker led presidential campaigns

for Presidents Ford, Reagan, and Bush.

A native of Houston, Baker graduated from Princeton

University in 1952 and received his J.D. with honors from the

University of Texas School of Law in 1957. He practiced law with

the firm of Andrews & Kurth from 1957 to 1975.

Baker is currently a senior partner in the law firm

of Baker & Botts and Senior Counselor to the Carlyle Group,

a merchant banking firm in Washington, D.C. He is honorary chairman

of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice

University and serves on the boards of Rice University, Princeton

University, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

in the Smithsonian and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The John Hamilton Fulton Memorial Lectureship in

the Liberal Arts was established at Middlebury College in 1966.

Named in honor of John Hamilton Fulton, a prominent banker, financier,

and civic leader, the lectureship was endowed by an emeritus member

of the Middlebury College Board of Trustees, a member of Mr. Fulton’s

family.
