Sarah C. Carey, a lawyer and consultant who provides trade and investment expertise to Western companies operating in the former Soviet Union, will speak on October 7 at the Geonomics Institute of Middlebury College. Entitled “Russia’s TransitionLessons from the Past Ten Years,” Carey’s talk will include a discussion of political, economic and social issues. A reception will take place at 7:00 p.m. followed by the talk at 7:30 p.m. in the Geonomics House on Hillcrest Road, off College Street (Route 125). Both events are free and open to the public.
A partner in the Moscow office of the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP, Ms. Carey is one of a small group of leading women executives from the U.S. working in Moscow. She has been an active pioneer in the evolution of Russian laws governing foreign investment, contributing to the formation of many of the new business structures that now exist in Russia.
Ms. Carey has also helped to create and counsel a number of investment funds operating in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)countries that were part of the former Soviet Union. She has been actively involved in business privatization and restructuring, and the organization of major Western purchases of Russian corporate securities. President Clinton named Ms. Carey to serve on the first board of directors of the U.S.-Russia Investment Fund, a U.S. government-funded organization which invests in Russian and joint Russian-American business ventures. She created and heads the U.S. Roundtable on Investing in the CIS, and has testified before Congress on U.S. trade and economic policy towards the CIS and Eastern Europe.
Ms. Carey’s talk is part of the Geonomics Institute’s Executivein-Residence Program, an initiative that brings business and policy leaders to Middlebury College for discussions, lectures, and consultation on cuttingedge international business and public policy issues. A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that is part of Middlebury College, the Institute offers programs and services designed to promote and serve directly the needs of expanding economic markets, with a primary focus on the former Soviet Union, East Asia and Latin America.
