Spring issue of New England Review features fiction, poetry and prose

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. ? New England Review (NER), a national quarterly publication of Middlebury College, has published its latest issue (Vol. 29, No. 1), marking 30 years of publication. The issue is available in the Middlebury College Book Store and through the journal’s Web site at www.nereview.com.  As part of the college’s commitment to conserving natural resources, the magazine is now published on 100 percent post consumer waste (PCW) recycled paper. This issue marks thirty years of publication for this national literary quarterly published by Middlebury College.

In this issue, poet Rick Barot considers Sylvia Plath’s imaginative process; Lavinia Greenlaw recaptures moments evoked by the music of her childhood and early youth; 1995 Middlebury College graduate J.M. Tyree investigates H. P. Lovecraft’s difficult days in New York; and essayist Bruce Mills reflects on the impact of autism and the stories we tell ourselves. Charles Simic translates a series of poems by Serbian author Novica Tadic, and Mark Harman introduces a selection from his new translation of Kafka’s first novel, “The Missing Person.” The diverse line-up of poetry and prose also includes new work by David Shields, Steve Almond, Elizabeth Searle, William Logan, David Yezzi, Chard de Niord and Jason Schneiderman.

NER, founded in 1978, has been a publication of Middlebury College since 1987. The selection of writings in each issue presents a broad spectrum of viewpoints and genres, including traditional and experimental fiction, translations in poetry and prose, criticism, letters from abroad, reviews in arts and literature, and rediscoveries.

NER is edited by Fulton Professor of Humanities Stephen Donadio. The poetry editor is C. Dale Young, and the managing editor is Carolyn Kuebler, a 1990 graduate of Middlebury College. Works originally published in NER are regularly selected for the “Best American” series, as well as for “The O. Henry Prize Stories,” “Best American Nonrequired Writing,” “New Stories from the South: The Year’s Best,” and for the Pushcart Prize.
