Nominations Sought for 2018 Gladstone Award
Middlebury faculty are invited to nominate a colleague or themselves for the annual Gladstone Award Honoring Excellence in Teaching. The following was sent by email from the vice president for academic affairs:
Gladstone Award Honoring Excellence in Teaching
The Gladstone Award Honoring Excellence in Teaching was established in 2012 by Christopher D. Gladstone (P’13) and Elise J. Rabekoff (P’13) to recognize faculty who have exhibited exceptional teaching and mentoring within and beyond the classroom. The award will provide support for faculty to undertake a project that will enhance their teaching within the classroom or support collaborative faculty/student work outside the classroom. The award will take the form of a grant in the amount of $10,000, to be expended within eighteen months of the date of the award. Last year’s Gladstone Award winner was Jessica Teets, whose project involved bringing Middlebury students to the Dominican Republic to conduct research projects on economic development initiatives, in partnership with the “Two Countries – One Bird” initiative.
The Gladstone Award will be granted annually to support one faculty-generated project. Team proposals are permitted. The award will be determined by a committee headed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and will be based on the record of past teaching excellence, including excellence in mentoring outside the classroom, and on the strength of the proposed project that will be supported by the award. All faculty are eligible to apply for the Gladstone award. The award recipient will be announced by May 15, 2018.
The award winner(s) will still be eligible for support from FPDF.
To apply:
To nominate another faculty member, submit a letter of nomination to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (ovpaa@middlebury.edu) by April 3, 2018. In the letter, explain how the nominee meets the criteria of the award- particularly evidence of teaching excellence or excellence in mentoring outside the classroom. Nominees will be contacted and asked to submit a proposal describing how the funds would be used by April 17, 2018.
To nominate yourself, by April 17, 2018, submit a cover letter to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (ovpaa@middlebury.edu) providing an overview of your past teaching/mentoring work. Along with the letter, include a current CV, and a proposal describing how the funds would be used. Proposals may be up to five pages in length, and should include:
- Description of the project that will be undertaken using the Gladstone award funds
- Detailed budget indicating how the funds will be spent—categories of expense may include travel, supplies, or salary for student research assistants
- Statement of how the proposed work will enhance teaching or support collaborative faculty/student work
