My name is DeShan (she/her), and I am a counselor at the Center for Health and Wellness, with a focus on Urgent and Transition Care. In this role I support students navigating medical leave and addressing medical and mental health challenges that affect their academics and well-being.

In addition to providing urgent and transition care, I offer ongoing counseling and therapy. My practice is client-centered, characterized by collaboration and trust-building with students. I aim to build therapeutic relationships grounded in mutual respect and believe that self-knowledge—understanding one’s tendencies, habits, and thoughts—is a powerful tool for personal growth. I integrate cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy into my approach.

My intention is to bring curiosity and warmth to my work, fostering an environment where students can reflect on their identities and explore their values, strengths, and stories. While supporting students in this exploration, I do my own internal work, reflecting on how my identity as a white, cisgender woman impacts the therapeutic relationship and my approach as a mental health counselor.

On a personal note, I love being outdoors. I enjoy playing tennis, swimming in the lake, and cross-country skiing. Staying connected to friends from all around the world is important to me and you will often find me chatting or texting a friend. One of my favorite things to do is to walk a labyrinth and have been known to go out of my way to find one.
