A Seminar
“Additive Manufacturing and High-Performance Computing: a Disruptive Latent Technology”

Speaker
Bruce Goodwin
Dr. Bruce Goodwin, Associate Director-at-Large for National Security Policy and Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), is responsible for policy research and liaison with the US military, US government, and non-governmental organizations.

From 2001 to 2013 he was the Principal Associate Director for LLNL’s nuclear weapons program. He led the certification of LLNL designed nuclear weapons and was responsible for establishing priorities, for developing strategies, and for the design and maintenance of LLNL designed nuclear weapons. While leading the Stockpile Stewardship Program at LLNL, he was instrumental in developing the Quantification of Margins and Uncertainties methodology that sustains the US nuclear deterrent without testing. Dr. Goodwin received his PhD and MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his BS in Physics from City College of New York. He started his professional career at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1981 and moved to LLNL in 1985 where he specialized in the impact of plutonium behavior on performance.

His seminar presentation will cover developments in the field of additive manufacturing technology (3-D printing with metals and other materials) and will address the potential impacts of this technology on issues that include nonproliferation and terrorism.
