the two artists standing next to each other

We close our 105th season with the dynamic duo of violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cédric Tiberghien. The two developed a tremendous rapport during their term as individual BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, where their unique partnership was observed by The Times of London: “Both of these players have the potential to conquer the world.” During this Middlebury return, Ibragimova and Tiberghien will play Janácek, Enescu, Gerald Barry’s vivacious Triorchic Blues, and Beethoven’s iconic “Kreutzer” sonata.

About the Artists: Both Ibragimova and Tiberghien enjoy flourishing careers as soloists, appearing with many of the world’s leading orchestras and as solo recitalists in some the most distinguished venues and festivals.Together they have recorded complete cycles of music by Schubert, Szymanowski, and Mozart (Hyperion), and a Beethoven Sonata cycle (Wigmore Live).

Performing music from baroque to new commissions on both modern and period instruments, Alina Ibragimova is recognised for the “immediacy and honesty” of her performances. “…Ibragimova’s playing has the curious ability to collapse any sense of distance between performer and listener”—The Guardian. Born in Russia, Ibragimova attended the Moscow Gnesin School, Yehudi Menuhin School, and Royal College of Music. An alumnus of the BBC New Generation Artists Scheme, her many accolades include two Royal Philharmonic Society awards and an MBE in the 2016 New Year Honours List. She performs on a c.1775 Anselmo Bellosio violin kindly provided by Georg von Opel.

Cédric Tiberghien is a French pianist who has established a truly international career. He has been particularly applauded for his versatility, as demonstrated by his wide-ranging repertoire, interesting programming, an openness to explore innovative concert formats, and his dynamic chamber music partnerships. Concerto appearances in recent seasons include his debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as well as re-invitations to the London Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and Orchestre National de Lyon. Tiberghien enjoys a long association with Wigmore Hall in London, where he has performed a complete Beethoven variation cycle juxtaposed with works by other composers, illustrating the evolution of the genre. He is a member of the Académie Musicale Philippe Jaroussky, where he teaches regularly.

“Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien have become today’s partnership of choice for violin and piano repertory.”—The Guardian

“dazzling all the way to its climatic finish and confirming the virtuosity of two performers at the top of their game”—bachtrack
