Middlebury alums Lauren Markham and Chris Knapp will read from their recent work and take questions. 

Lauren Markham is the author of the award-winning The Far Away Brothers: Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life, the critically-acclaimed A Map of Future Ruins: On Borders and Belonging (2024), and the recently-released Immemorial. Based in California, her essays and journalism regularly appear in outlets such as Harper’s, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Magazine and VQR, where she is a contributing editor.

Chris Knapp’s work has appeared in The Paris Review, n+1, Granta, and the New England Review, among others. He earned an MFA in Fiction at the University of Virginia, and an MA in Journalism and International Affairs from SciencesPo in Paris. States of Emergency is his first novel.
