Andrew Brischler is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He creates bold, energetic works on paper and panel using colored pencil, marker, and graphite that challenge our ideas of graphic design and fine art abstraction. Brischler’s source material is culled from a wide swath of cultural references including book covers, vintage film posters, ephemera from long-out-of-print queer publications, and digital imagery in the age of social media. He sees his entire practice as a continuous record of his own neuroses. Each work is a piece of cultural detritus, part of an ever-evolving narrative of his personal pop cultural canon. In his lecture at Middlebury, Brischler will speak on his work, what inspires him, and how his practice is helps make sense of this exhausting, dizzying sociopolitical moment.
