Beyond Walls lecture with Hannah Smith Allen

Soon after the 2016 presidential election, Allen visited Google Earth to study the wall separating California from Mexico. She noticed that glitches in the mapping software allowed users to slip through the wall into another nation’s territory. Immediately, she began to video record her Google Earth travels. The digital aberrations of the collapsing wall seemed to her a perfect symbol of the fragile border and the myths and narratives that the United States uses to construct its histories. These glitches inspired her to make three physical trips to the US southern border to photograph the landscape. FREE
