Dr. Murti is a Prof. Emerita of German who retired from Middlebury College in 2009. Her areas of research and writing include Gender Studies and German Orientalism. She has written books such as- ‘To Veil or not to Veil’, which explores race, immigration, and Islam in Europe, and ‘India: The Seductive and Seduced Other of German Orientalism’, which looks at colonialism and gender.
Dr. Murti also writes detective novels that combine cultural studies and archaeology. Two elderly South-Asian women – Leela and Meena – are the unusual super-sleuths in her series! Dr. Murti is also an artist and her painting is influenced by South-Indian Bharatanatyam dance and Carnatic music. Dr. Murti’s triptych- ‘The Birth and Death of Patriarchy’ is on display at the Chellis House (behind Proctor dining hall), which depicts aspects of the Hindu, Yoruba, and Islamic traditions.
