J. W. Goethe, "Urfaust"
Join us to celebrate the German Theater Group’s 25th birthday with two performances of Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s “Urfaust” (1772/ 1775).
One of the most famous plays from the German-speaking literatures, Goethe’s “Faust” tells the story of Johann Heinrich Faust who, pursuing his ardent desire to understand “what holds the world together at its innermost core”, strikes a pact with the devil. As Mephistopheles sets out to tempt Faust with all the knowledge, entertainment, and beauty of the world, Faust seems unimpressed until he meets the young Gretchen. Beautiful, innocent, and impressionable, she seems the perfect prey for Mephistopheles’ devilish plot to promise Faust an eternal moment of joy and transcendence in return for his soul in the afterlife. Destroying Gretchen in the process, neither Faust nor Mephistopheles might get what they are after, leaving the audience eager for the continuation of the Faust-story—which Goethe famously provided in “Faust II” decades later.
In German, with a cast of German student-actors, including Nikolas Homann (Faust), Atticus Hodges (Mephistopheles), and Sophie Liebmann (Gretchen).
