The Mystery of the Israeli Detective
Why are there hardly any detective stories in Hebrew? Is it true that there is no mystery in Israel? What can the marginal genre of crime writing teach us about Hebrew culture? What does crime fiction have to do with ethnicity and identity in Israel? Award winning author Dror Mishaani will discuss his best-selling detective series and his diverse scholarly work, ranging from Mizrahi culture and Hebrew literature to the history of crime fiction. The lecture will be followed by book signing and sale.
Dror Mishani is an Israeli writer, editor, translator and literary scholar. His series of crime fiction, featuring police inspector Avraham Avraham, was first published in Hebrew in 2011 and was since translated to over 15 languages. The first two novels in the series, The Missing File and Possibility of Violence appeared in English and received raving reviews in the US and the UK. The Missing File was shortlisted for the 2013 CWA international dagger award and won the Martin Beck award for the best translated crime novel in Sweden. Mishaani’s third novel The Man Who Wanted to Know Everything came out in Hebrew earlier this summer.
