Past, Present and Future of Democracy in America

The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Autocracy and Democracy (supported by the Cangiano Family Fund) presents “Past, Present and Future of Democracy in America” with Robert Mickey.

Robert Mickey is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 2002. His research focuses on American political development, sub national authoritarianism, racial politics, and democratic backsliding. He is the author of “Paths Out of Dixie: The Democratization of Authoritarian Enclaves in America’s Deep South, 1944–1972,” which received both the J. David Greenstone Prize and the V. O. Key Award. Mickey has published widely in leading journals and edited volumes, and his work has been featured in major media outlets. He is also a Faculty Associate at the Center for Political Studies and the Center for Emerging Democracies. His current projects explore the political economy of Reconstruction, authoritarian policing,and racial conflict in American democracy.
