Web scraping, succinctly defined, is “That thing on the internet looks cool. I want it!” We’ll learn to use web scraping to extract images, text, and data from a variety of websites. Although this workshop will use R, these techniques can be applied in a variety of different languages, as many other language have analogous functions. No R experience is necessary, although a background in programming will be helpful. I hope to convince you that web scraping isn’t rocket science—most data, text, and images can be extracted and transformed into a useable format in a matter of minutes!
