Student Hirschfield Screening: Toxic

Toxic (Saule Bliuvaite, Lithuania, 2024)
Toxic (Lithuania 2024) is the debut feature from writer-director Saule Bliuvaite, and winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film festival. It follows the story of two teenage girls who attend a modeling school in the hopes of escaping a bleak existence and a maddening lack of opportunity or aspirational encouragement from their families and society. Masterfully combining humor with despair and even horror, Toxic offers a perspective on Eastern European youth that manages to be brutally honest, sad, endearing, critical and empathetic at once. As Guy Lodge noted in Variety: “The mean girls of your average Hollywood teen movie wouldn’t last a morning in the ruthless adolescent playground of Toxic”.
