The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Autocracy and Democracy presents “Defending Democracy in Authoritarian Systems” with Nicholas Opiyo.
How do individuals and organizations effectively advocate for human rights and democracy when faced with government oppression and personal risk? What role does international support, or the lack thereof, play in the success and safety of human rights advocates in countries like Uganda? How can legal frameworks be used both to protect human rights and, conversely, to suppress dissent? Opiyo will share his experiences in defending free elections, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech and the press, providing legal aid and strategic litigation to protect civil liberties, and dissenting at personal risk.
Nicholas Opiyo is a world-renowned and award-winning human rights attorney who advocates for civil liberties, democracy, and justice in Uganda, across Africa, and beyond.
