The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Security and Global Affairs presents “Watching Power Politics in the UN Security Council at Close Quarters” with Richard Gowen.

For the last seven years, Richard Gowan represented the International Crisis Group - a global prevention organization - at the UN. Richard and his colleagues liaise closely with the permanent and elected members of the Security Council on crises including the wars in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan as well as long-term challenges such as climate change, peace and security.  This work offers a unique day-to-day vantage point to see how Council members deal with matters of war and peace, how major powers including China and the USA are cooperating through the UN, and how smaller countries try to shape the Security Council. Richard will reflect on both major trends at the UN, and the tradecraft of making an NGO’s voice heard in these debates.
