Join us for this inaugural lecture by Stephen Ratcliff, Jacob Abbott Professor of Natural Sciences

The natural scientist may describe the universe in terms of where and when things are found, or actions occur.  But an alternate description tells of how frequently, and with what prominence, the notable events transpire.  The frequency spectrum can be a far more relevant summary of the essence of intrinsic and extrinsic properties of objects and phenomena than is a direct exposition of what went where, when.  In this lecture, intended for a general audience, we will first review concepts of frequency spectra as pertain to sounds.  Then we will see further applications of these ideas, particularly to color and light and electromagnetic spectra, from the celestial to the mundane.  But please, no smoking.
