We will be hosting a Sunday morning service “From Harlem To Heaven!” led by Midd community leader Francois Clemmons. We will come together in celebration and reverence of how far we have come as a Black community in America and to celebrate the triumphs of those who came before us. While this service will have some Christian pieces involved, this is mainly a cultural celebration and is open to Black, other POC, and allies of the Black community.

This event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and Middlebury community members.

Amanda, reporter and feminist linguist, deconstructs language—from insults and cursing, gossip, and catcalling, to grammar and pronunciation patterns—to reveal the ways it has been used for centuries to keep women and other marginalized genders from power. Ever wonder why so many people are annoyed when women talk with vocal fry or use the word like as a filler? Or why certain gender-neutral terms stick and others don’t? Or where stereotypes of how women and men speak come from in the first place?

The AFC invites you to Club Vibez, a Black History Month dance party with all the Hip Hop, Afrobeats, and Dancehall Reggae vibes you can imagine. DJs from Solid Vibez entertainment out of NYC are coming out to show you a good time.

This event will bring the community together in food and fellowship to celebrate Black culture, learn about various civil rights heroes, and engage in conversation. Esther Charlestin, the Dean of Climate and Culture at Middlebury Union Middle School, will provide the keynote conversation.

October 11th is National Coming Out Day, which means that it is time for the AFC’s Annual Coming Out Day Campfire Stories! We will meet at The Knoll on October 11th from 4:30-6:15 p.m. This event will be a campfire at the Knoll that will include hot dogs and s’mores, sitting around the fire and sharing coming out stories, concerns, fears, and joys of belonging to a queer and trans community. We hope to see you there!
