Pursuing an Advanced Degree in the Humanities: Tips and Stories from an

Connor Williams ’09 is currently pursuing a PhD in History and African American Studies at Yale. He is happy to share advice, experiences, and answer questions for students considering pursuing an advanced degree in the humanities. He hopes to demystify both the application process and the humanities grad school experience itself. In addition to discussing a PhD in the humanities, he’s also open to discussing post-doctorate employment prospects, including work in museums, private schools, and state educational offices (such as historical societies, state libraries, and so forth).

Join Denise Shekerjian ‘75, lawyer, writer and author of books and essays, who specializes in assisting students who need assistance with college admission essays, medical school applications, and other graduate and fellowship applications. Learn how to avoid common pitfalls in your personal statement that result in dull and predictable essays. Understand the well-worn clichés and how to steer clear of the “I love people and I love science!!!” theme in your essay. You’ll come away with a good appreciation for how to reflect on and synthesize an experience. Open to all students!

This summer join the dynamic, accomplished and charismatic group of Overland leaders who help kids see the world and all of its beauty and promise. Overland hires exceptional college students and recent graduates to lead summer programs across the country and around the world. Our staff of over 200 leaders and support staff spend 10 days training and six weeks leading or supporting programs throughout the summer. Small groups, carefully crafted programs and inspiring leadership have been at the heart of what we do for the past 34 years.
