Hirschfield International Film Series: Another Round

Sponsored by:
Film & Media Culture
Four friends, all teachers at various stages of middle age, are stuck in a rut. Unable to share their passions either at school or at home, they embark on an audacious experiment from an obscure philosopher: to see if a constant level of alcohol in their blood will help them find greater freedom and happiness. At first they each find a new-found zest, but as the gang pushes their experiment further, issues that have been simmering for years come to a head. In Danish and Swedish with English subtitles. (1 hour 57 minutes).

Hirschfield International Film Series: We Are Little Zombies (Wî â Ritoru Zonbîzu)

Sponsored by:
Film & Media Culture
When four young orphans—Hikari, Ikuko, Ishi, and Takemura—first meet, their parents’ bodies are being turned into dust, like fine Parmesan atop a plate of spaghetti Bolognese, and yet none of them can shed a tear. They are like zombies; devoid of all emotion. Tragedy, comedy, music, social criticism, and teenage angst are all subsumed in this eccentric cinematic tsunami. A Hirschfield International Film Series event. (120 minutes). Free.

Towards a Palestinian Third Cinema

In 1970 the filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin were commissioned by Fatah (with funding from the Arab League) to create a film about the Palestinian Revolution. The footage they shot eventually became the well known essay film Ici et Ailleurs. In 1971 Masao Adachi and Koji Wakamatsu visited the region to shoot footage for their film Japanese Red Army/PFLP Declaration of World War. These works have received considerable critical attention since they first appeared.

Today, no society is immune from the effects of capitalism. In Haiti “Batay La,” or the struggle, has been ongoing since before the slave revolution that founded the Caribbean nation. Batay La examines the current anti-imperialist movement in Haiti, led for decades by grassroots workers’ rights organization Batay Ouvriye (Workers Fight). Founded in 1994, Batay Ouvriye is known throughout Haiti as a fierce, uncompromised organization dedicated to overturning the system of exploitation of poor workers.
