The German Theater Group at Middlebury presents this semester’s German play, “Hänsel und Gretel oder: Die mörderischen Kinder von Finsterwalde.” In this fresh take on the Grimms’ famous fairy tale, a police detective and his assistant are left to wonder what really happened in the house of a very old lady who is found brutally murdered one morning. Do Hänsel and Gretel, caught in the woods not far from the crime scene, tell the truth when they claim that the old woman was a cannibalistic witch who tortured the children for days?

The German Theater Group at Middlebury presents Arthur Schnitzler’s notorious play “Reigen”. Written in Vienna in 1900 but only circulated as a script amongst the author’s friends, this play premiered in Berlin in 1920 and caused a major public scandal for its sexual content and its unabashed criticism of social mores and norms in modern society. Now, 100 years later, it has not lost its freshness as we watch ten characters engage in their dramatic “pas de deux”, in search in search of love and meaning, but only offering and finding sex and words …

The German Theater Group at Middlebury presents Christine Steinwasser’s hilarious “Mörder mögen’s messerscharf.” In this contemporary “Krimikomödie”, we follow the murdered Ansgar von Herrschershausen as he tries to figure out who killed him callously. When the police get involved and a second murder occurs, all eyes turn on Lukretia von Herrschershausen and her simpleton lover, Dietmar Knör. Thanks to Ansgar’s aunts Honoria and Restituta—and after resorting to some white magic—, the culprits can be brought to justice …
