The Vermont Choral Union

Jeff Rehbach, music director Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, the Vermont Choral Union draws inspiration from more than 10 centuries of classical a cappella music, ranging from timeless works of the past and today’s newest compositions. This program features the premiere of a new choral suite commissioned by the Choral Union, composed by award-winning composer Christina Whitten Thomas ’01.5, incorporating texts by Burlington-based writer Abigail Carroll, 1950s poet and Waterbury patient Jean Killary, and Middlebury faculty member Jay Parini. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration features a hybrid of concert and participatory dance, highlighting the rich and related traditions of Ireland and Brittany. Timothy Cummings, affiliate artist and piper, is joined by Pete Sutherland (fiddle, banjo, song), Dominique Dodge (harp, song), and special guest Jeremiah McLane (accordian, piano), dance caller, and student guests. The Western Star

The Western Star: an epic poem, with songs, written and performed by Jack DesBois ‘15.5. A performance in the epic oratory tradition, The Western Star tells the story of the Three Kings and their journey west to Bethlehem. With poetry and song, it celebrates the season of Epiphany and the return of the light and contributes to the living tradition of Biblical storytelling with freshness and reverence. Jack DesBois is a singer, actor, poet and playwright based in Middlebury, seeking to create dramatic works that build community and restore the soul.
