Jennifer Fraser, Ph.D., Professor of Ethnomusicology and Anthropology, Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College

In this lecture, Dr. Jennifer Fraser will trace the reinvention of her pedagogical and scholarly praxis in recent years as she has become committed to the design of scholarly projects that are responsive to community needs and desires, to public-facing scholarship, and high-impact pedagogies involving community-based learning and digital humanities project.

Lynnsey Weissenberger, adjunct professor of Library and Information Studies at Florida State University, explores the ever-changing world of music information technologies and their challenges in documenting, describing, and transmitting global musical traditions. As both a practitioner of Irish traditional music and an information technologist, Dr. Weissenberger asks: What is music information? How can we accurately and ethically convey complex socio-cultural understandings of music within information systems?

Jeff Rehbach, music director Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, the Vermont Choral Union draws inspiration from more than 10 centuries of classical a cappella music, ranging from timeless works of the past and today’s newest compositions. This program features the premiere of a new choral suite commissioned by the Choral Union, composed by award-winning composer Christina Whitten Thomas ’01.5, incorporating texts by Burlington-based writer Abigail Carroll, 1950s poet and Waterbury patient Jean Killary, and Middlebury faculty member Jay Parini. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration features a hybrid of concert and participatory dance, highlighting the rich and related traditions of Ireland and Brittany.
