Known for “passionate performances that combine technical accomplishment with interpretative flair” (the Strad), the acclaimed Heath Quartet—the series’ first-ever quartet in residence—returns to help us celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birth year. They present Beethoven’s entire string quartet cycle over six concerts (two each term), bookending weeklong residencies with our campus and community. The October 5 concert launches the cycle with Quartet No. 1 in F Major, op. 18.1; the “Serioso” quartet, op. 95; and Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major, op. 130. The dynamic and charismatic Heath Quartet is one of the most exciting British chamber ensembles of the moment, steadily building a reputation for their upbeat and integrated sound. Their second week of residency starts with the free January 11 concert, featuring Beethoven’s Quartet No. 3 in D Major, op. 18.3; Quartet No. 16 in F Major, op. 135; and the first “Razumovsky” quartet, op. 59.1. Imani Winds & Catalyst Quartet

Two acclaimed ensembles join forces in a program highlighting experiences of (im)migration. Featured: the Vermont premiere of a new work by Jessie Montgomery, commissioned by Music Accord and Sphinx, and inspired by the Great Migration. Through the lens of her great-grandfather, Montgomery brings together spirituals and work songs that reflect his travels from Mississippi to the west, north, and back to Georgia.

Recent winners of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship Award, Lyon International Chamber Music Competition, Young Classical Artists Trust, and more, the Castalian Quartet is rapidly emerging as an exciting voice in the international chamber music scene. The acclaimed Brentano String Quartet—hailed as “passionate, uninhibited, and spellbinding” (The Independent, London)—returns to Middlebury, this time joined by five-time Grammy Award-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw. The Brentano Quartet plays Haydn’s Op. 20 No. 2 and Bartók’s second quartet, then joins Upshaw for performances of Schoenberg’s second quartet and Respighi’s Il Tramonto (The Sunset). 100th Anniversary matinee concert! 

On this day in 1919, lutenist and balladeer Thomas Wilfred presented a dramatic recital of ancient songs as the series’ first-ever performance.  The Heath Quartet helps us celebrate this anniversary with a bonus lunchtime recital, featuring a sneak preview of selections the quartet will perform in its debut at the Elbphilharmonie, in Hamburg, Germany the following week. This is a great chance to hear the quartet reach beyond Beethoven into contemporary music. Free, no tickets required

Rahim AlHaj Trio

As an Iraqi immigrant to the United States, oud virtuoso and composer Rahim AlHaj uses his musical talents to spread hope and peace. AlHaj—a  two time Grammy-nominee—joins Iranian santur player Sourena Sefati and Palestinian-American percussionist Issa Malluf in a concert of Middle Eastern music demonstrating friendship, understanding, and an acknowledgement of humanity’s oneness as we all try to live in peace under the same sky.  A Performing Arts Series event. Tickets: $22 General public/$16 Midd ID holders/$10 Youth (18 and under)/$6 Midd students.

Written by seven female writers, it’s based on personal interviews with seven remarkable women who faced life-threatening obstacles—resistance, death threats, entrenched norms, and pervasive violence—yet later brought heroic changes to their home countries of Pakistan, Nigeria, Ireland, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Russia, and Cambodia.
