Lecture by Janet Breslin-Smith.  What is the purpose of American power?

Bruce Klingner, Middlebury Class of 1982, is Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, where he specializes in Korean and Japanese affairs. Prior to joining the Heritage Foundation, he spent 20 years working for the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency. His talk is titled,”North Korea: Assessing the Threat and U.S. Policy Recommendations” and will take a critical look at the state of relations between the United States and North Korea during the Trump presidency

Join Project Pengyou for a discussion about the leadership styles and visions of leaders Trump, Xi and Putin. Faculty from the Political Science and Russian Departments will be giving short presentations followed by a general discussion. Snacks will be provided!

As the 90th Academy Award ceremony approaches, MiddLaw would like to present documentary Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, which details the legal battle struggle of the only U.S. bank indicted after the 2008 financial crisis. Abacus Federal Savings Bank, the first Chinese-owned bank in New York’s Chinatown, was accused of mortgage fraud in a lawsuit that spanned five years.

This will be an open information session to discuss educational opportunities at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). Brandon McNiece, of MIIS recruiting will be on hand with professor Orion Lewis to discuss undergraduate opportunities, accelerated MA degrees, the full range of Institute degree offerings and opportunities, as well as scholarships and financial incentives.

Who watches over the party-state? In this engaging analysis, Maria Repnikova reveals the webs of an uneasy partnership between critical journalists and the state in China. More than merely a passive mouthpiece or a dissident voice, the media in China also plays a critical oversight role, one more frequently associated with liberal democracies than with authoritarian systems..

Students give posters on their semester-long work mapping global environmental governance in key areas. In doing so, they will show 1) how the international society has structured governance in important areas, such as coral reef management, transboundary pollution, and species conservation, by illustrating which are the major treaties/organizations/institutions affecting governance; 2) what some of the major challenges to governance are (e.g., lack of enforcement; unclear obligations; competing treaties/institutions); 3) what scope (if any) there is for improvement in this area.
