Maurits van der Veen is Associate Professor of Government at the College of William & Mary, where his research focus is on applying machine learning and automated text analysis techniques to key issues in international relations. His talk, “Brexit and the Politics of Xenophobia” will discuss how the British tabloid press linked the European Union to problems with refugees and immigration in the mind of voters, driving many people to support Brexit for reasons having little or nothing to do with the European Union itself.
