The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs Global Fellows program presents “Saving Liberalism from Crisis” by Professor Samuel Moyn.
Soon after the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump, liberalism was declared a failure. In response, and not without some anxiety, liberal voices rose in defense of its successes. What both sides missed is that liberalism was transformed in the middle of the twentieth century, and is not there to leave or take without considering its radically different forms. With Trump again on the ballot, it is more important than ever to consider what it would take to rescue liberalism for our time, and indeed whether that is a worthy project.
Samuel Moyn is Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale University, and author of “Liberalism against Itself: Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Time.”
