Tom Root, Biology Department, Middlebury College: “Strange beauty: sensation, behavior, and
development of the California two spot octopus (Octopus bimaculoides)”. Octopuses are notorious for their peculiar appearance, unusual habits, and great intelligence. Recent reports have buttressed those perceptions, citing for example, their sophisticated camouflaging, hunting, and learning. Researchers in our lab, using traditional and new techniques, are clarifying earlier findings, and extending our understanding of octopod senses, hunting strategies, and early behavioral development, in some ways, adding to octopod notoriety.
