Malcolm X's Birthday: Spike Lee's Malcolm X

Join us for a celebration of the 99th anniversary of the birth of the visionary Civil Rights icon, Malcolm X. On Sunday, May 19, we will show Spike Lee’s award-winning biopic, _Malcolm X_, in the Irvine Auditorium, and on Monday, May 20, Dr. Khuram Hussain, Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Associate Professor of Education Studies at Middlebury College, will present a lecture, “The Muslim Roots of #BlackLivesMatter”. This is another collaboration between the Institutional JEDI Office and the Black Leaders and Allies Collaborative (BLAAC).

Richland Film Screening and Discussion with Director Irene Lusztig

James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies’ CIF and the JEDI office at MIIS present a screening of the movie “Richland”. A U.S. nuclear company town stakes its identity on its little-known atomic origin story in this timely examination of the habits of thought that normalize the extraordinary violence of the past. Irene Lusztig, the director, will also be present to take questions after the screening.

BIPOC Voices: "Covering China as a Chinese American" by Emily Feng

Emily Feng is an international correspondent for NPR covering China, Taiwan and beyond. Feng joined NPR in 2019. She roves around China, through its big cities and small villages, reporting on social trends as well as economic and political news coming out of Beijing. Feng contributes to NPR’s newsmagazines, newscasts, podcasts and digital platforms.

Join us on Tuesday, March 26th for our panel featuring BIPOC-identifying MIIS staff and students as we celebrate the culmination of Women’s History Month. During this event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the unique challenges faced by BIPOC women in higher education institutions and gain insights into how they navigate these obstacles. They will share their personal experiences, shedding light on their resilience and achievements.
