A colloquium talk by Michael Shank, Communications Director, Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance.

This talk highlights effective climate communication strategies and techniques to boost environmental campaign awareness and advocacy. Join us in a discussion on behavioral science-based principles to consider as well as creative approaches to employ when communicating and campaigning on climate change.

This evening’s film and panel with include a screening of Huey’s “Henry David Thoreau” followed by a panel discussion with Huey (the filmmaker), Matt Schlein, Director of The Walden Woods Project and Rebecca Kneale Gould, Middlebury College Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and current Thoreau Society Board member.

Globalism and capitalism as we know it are failing us — and the evidence is all around us in the destruction of our environment, and the privatization of our shared wealth. What can we do to shift the story line, and re-write our future? What alternatives do we have at hand?

Meet at the front porch Franklin Environmental Center to join the very popular Campus Tree Tour led by passionate Middlebury horticulturalist and tree expert Tim Parsons. Learn fun facts and hear stories about various trees around campus. Tim will also explain how he manages our rural Vermont campus as an urban forest.

Campus audience, not open to public. The only possible outside attendees mentioned so far would be the Middlebury Town Energy Committee. I don’t know how many people are on that committee. II will be back in touch once I have more information to share about the actual logistics of the event – it’s still pretty vague, but we wanted to get the venue secured ASAP.

“Ecology and conservation in a variable and uncertain world” by Easton R. White, Research Associate, Department of Biology, University of Vermont.

Dance, music and visual arts event, panel and reception to honor Earth Day & the Arts. Earth Day 2019 Nourishing Change Through the Arts will be an approximately three-hour event with live music and dance performances, artistic displays, and a panel discussion with students and local artists followed by an informal reception. Art will address the theme of all living beings - including humans in relationship to the Earth and our changing climate. All programming will be engaging and participatory when possible and choreographed to flow, literally, like water throughout the entire venue.
