Filmmaker Marilyn Solaya will travel all the way from Havana, Cuba to present her documentary In the Wrong Body (2010, 55 mins, Spanish with English subtitles). The film tells the story of Mavi Susel, who underwent the first gender reassignment operation in Cuba in 1988. In the Wrong Body explores such timely issues as the meaning of femininity in the macho and patriarchal society in Cuba where many stereotypes and prejudices still exist. Q&A with the filmmaker to follow screening.

The Feminist Resource Center at Chellis House and a group of concerned students will march in solidarity with the protests for women’s and human rights currently occurring in Iran. Participants will also have a chance to cut their hair in solidarity with women in Iran starting at 2 p.m. at Chellis House (56 Hillcrest Road). At 3:30 p.m., participants will march to Middlebury Chapel and will proceed to Twilight Hall. Signs will be provided.

Ruth Farmer is a poet and essayist from Bristol, Vermont. Her prose and poetry have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. She will be reading from her new collection of poetry “Snapshots of the Wind.” A free sushi lunch will be served.
