This year, in addition to our usual hours, the museum will be open most Thursday evenings from 6 to 9pm during the academic year. Nights at the Museum will often feature various types of informal events, from student gallery talks to musical performances to contemplative coloring and artist-led sketching and beyond, and free refreshments will be available (while they last!). Award-winning journalist Elaine Weiss shares her research on the last step in the battle for granting the vote to women and touches on the concurrent museum exhibit exploring the controversy over women’s role in American society. Free

Shimenawa, or “enclosing ropes”, are used to construct sacred space in the worship of kami (Shinto gods). Shan Zeng ’19 will discuss the history of shimenawa in a short talk based on her thesis work. The talk will be followed by light refreshments and a visit to the Reiff Gallery of Asian Art to view the newly installed shimenawa there.

Fulbright-winning artist Mikael Chukwuma Owunna discusses how Limit(less), his series of photographic portraits of LGBTQ+ Africans in diaspora, uses celebratory imagery to challenge a colonial legacy of homophobia. Meet the artist at a reception following this illustrated lecture. Free

 

Middlebury College Affiliate artists Diana Fanning and Dieuwke Davydov will be joined by Grammy-nominated flutist Karen Kevra of Cornwall in a 40-minute concert of music inspired by visual images. The program features Charles Koechlin’s Fourteen Pieces for Flute and Piano, performed in sync with projected images from James P. Blair’s collection. The Middlebury College Museum of Art is open from 6:30-7:00 PM for patrons to enjoy the full exhibition. Free

Complete with a swing band, hors d’oœuvres and wine and beer (for guests 21+), this is a perfect evening to explore Middlebury’s exquisite collection of art, wear your spring finest, and enjoy the company of friends. Free of charge and open to all students, presented by the Student Friends of the Art Museum.

This exhibition explores the artistry and history of ancient Chinese gold (ca. 500 BCE–900 CE) and the story of how it entered American museum collections. Gold artifacts are accompanied by innovative digital features that bring to life recent excavations, traditional goldsmithing techniques, and the diverse artisans who created them. Free
