Helen Riess

Helen Riess P’13, ’15 is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the empathy and relational science program in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She teaches about therapeutic relationships and conducts translational research on the neuroscience of empathy and emotions. Riess received her bachelor’s degree at Wesleyan University and her MD from Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency, her chief residency, and a research fellowship at MGH. Her work has been published in leading medical journals and she is a contributor to the Huffington Post. The Wayland, Massachusetts, resident is cofounder and chief scientific officer of Empathetics Inc., a company that provides Web-based and blended empathy-training solutions and related relational-skills solutions for health care and other industries.
