As we all do our part to help limit the spread of COVID-19, it has become increasingly clear that our spring Commencement celebration cannot take place as planned, in-person, on Saturday, May 16. Our celebrations will instead be adapted to be a series of virtual events. We would also like to invite all members of the spring 2020 graduating class, and their families, to participate in a future ceremony of their choice. At any future ceremony in which 2020 graduates participate, they will be celebrated and recognized as members of this class.
Next Monday, we resume instruction at MIIS. We expect this to be a stimulating and mostwelcome return to our fundamental mission, for students and faculty alike. But it will be anything but business as usual. I’d like to share a few observations about how we’re approaching the weeks ahead.
Dear Middlebury Institute Students, we have decided we need to move quickly to a mandatory remote work model on the MIIS campus—beginning today, Tuesday, March 17. Staff and faculty have been asked, if able, to come to the office today to collect necessary equipment for remote work and make arrangements with supervisors. All graduate assistants and graduate research assistants who will be working remotely during this period of closure should make necessary arrangements and plans with their supervisors today, if they have not done so already.
Dear Institute Faculty: Effective at 5PM today, Tuesday, March 17, the Institute will be closed indefinitely, due to the likelihood of a “shelter in place” order by Monterey County. All but a few “essential” employees will be required to work remotely.

We are dealing with extraordinary circumstances, at the Institute—and the world—and how the staff have taken the lead to rally us as a community, showing remarkable resourcefulness, positivity, and professionalism, is deeply heartening.
We are now three weeks into the spring semester and all of our students who traveled from China over the winter break are now back in classes and no illnesses have been reported.

A large number of MIIS students are travelling to campus from China this weekend, and the number of cases continues to rise. Those students – in degree and non-degree programs alike – travelling to Monterey may face unexpected delays in getting to campus. In addition to the recommendations and information resources included in my Friday message, I have additional instructions for students and faculty.
