The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences offer Middlebury students fully funded awards to attend any of the three conferences.

The Middlebury College Student Participant Scholarships are available for current undergraduate students and recent alums (graduation years 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024) of Middlebury College who would like to attend the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences.

The awards are granted based on the quality of work submitted and cover conference tuition, room, and board.

A Middlebury College student may apply for more than one conference in a summer; however, it is possible to accept a scholarship to attend only one conference that year. Though a scholarship recipient may apply again in a subsequent year for one of the conferences not yet attended, please note that the admissions board gives preference to Middlebury students who have not yet received financial aid to attend one of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences.

Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference

For ten days in August, Participants experience the opportunity of working under the guidance of notable writers, including MacArthur Fellows, U.S. Poets Laureate, and recipients of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award.

This conference is designed to provide training and community to beginning as well as experienced translators in the pursuit of translating literary texts into English—or to those aiming to be more sophisticated readers of literary translation and to incorporate it into the classroom.

An introductory workshop is available for those with limited or perhaps no foreign language background who would like to learn more about the translation process, and a manuscript workshop is available for someone with a background in a foreign language who would be able to submit a translation sample with the application (Middlebury students who do not yet have a translation manuscript to submit are encouraged to develop one with the application in mind; should you have any questions about this, please send a note to blt@middlebury.edu for more information).
