Middlebury Student Awards
The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences offer Middlebury students fully funded awards to attend any of the three conferences.
The Middlebury College Student Contributor Awards are available for current undergraduate students and recent alums (graduation years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023) of Middlebury College who would like to attend the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences.
The awards are granted based on the quality of work submitted and cover conference tuition, room, and board.
Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference
Contributors are strong writers with a range of experience who are in the early stages of their literary careers or ongoing learners of the literary arts. Though some may have a literary background and/or MFA, some may not, and not many at this level will not have started publishing yet in magazines and periodicals.
2023 Dates and Location
Wednesday, August 16 through Saturday, August 26. The conference takes place at the Bread Loaf campus of Middlebury College in Ripton, Vermont.
Apply
Middlebury College Student Contributor Award applications are accepted online and must be submitted by March 1. Please note that this scholarship does not require an application fee.
In addition to the online application, scholarship applicants must submit a writing sample. See the Manuscript Guidelines for important details.
Bread Loaf Environmental Writers’ Conference
This week-long program is designed to hone the skills of people interested in producing literary writing about the environment and the natural world.
Thanks to a generous contribution from the Middlebury College Environmental Studies Program and the Franklin Environmental Center, the Middlebury College Student Contributor Awards for this Conference will include a $500 travel stipend in addition to covering tuition, room, and board.
2023 Dates and Location
Friday, June 2 to Thursday, June 8. The conference takes place at the Bread Loaf campus of Middlebury College in Ripton, Vermont.

Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference
This conference is designed to provide training and community to beginning as well as experienced translators in the pursuit of translating literary texts into English—or to those aiming to be more sophisticated readers of literary translation and to incorporate it into the classroom.
An introductory workshop is available for those with limited or perhaps no foreign language background who would like to learn more about the translation process, and a manuscript workshop is available for someone with a background in a foreign language who would be able to submit a translation sample with the application (Middlebury students who do not yet have a translation manuscript to submit are encouraged to develop one with the application in mind; should you have any questions about this, please send a note to blt@middlebury.edu for more information).

Recommendation Form
For those who are current undergraduates, we also require a completed recommendation form. Applicants should ask a Middlebury College instructor to complete and submit the form. The instructor can fill in the form or simply answer the questions in the body of an email—more details are noted on the form. Completed recommendations should be sent by email to Bread Loaf.
