Joe Flaherty ’15, Former Editor of the Middlebury Campus, Wins Polk Award

announced on February 20 in a ceremony held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

According to Flaherty, he and Farzan are still reporting in order to find out the full extent of the hotel chain’s collaboration with ICE. They’re also closely following two lawsuits that have been filed as a result of the story—one by the attorney general of Washington state and the other by a prominent Latino civil rights organization.

Flaherty and Farzan share the award for immigration coverage with María Pérez of the Naples Daily News, who reported how Florida companies hired undocumented immigrants to avoid having to compensate them for dangerous jobs.

Reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post, New Yorker, CNN, and Vice News were also among the winners.

Long Island University gives out the awards, which are named in honor of George Polk, a CBS correspondent who was killed while covering the Greek Civil War in 1948.
