New England Review’s Summer Issue Features 18 Polish Poets

July 10, 2019

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The summer 2019 issue of
New England Review (NER) presents a special feature of Polish poetry. You won’t find Miłosz, Herbert, or Szymborska here. The poets in this selection, edited by Ellen Hinsey and translated by Jakob Ziguras, are largely unknown in English. These are poems that Poles who care deeply about poetry wanted to share beyond the boundaries of their own language. Their unfamiliarity in English—and belovedness in Polish—was the central organizing principle.

Also in this issue are new poems by such luminaries as David Baker, Mark Irwin, and Marilyn Hacker, alongside newcomers, including Annah Omune Sidigu, T. J. McLemore, and Devon Walker-Figueroa, winner of the 2018 NER Emerging Writers Award. Gabrielle Lucille Fuentes, Leslie Bazzett, and Steve Almond contribute new stories, and Dan O’Brien ’96, Alisa Koyrakh, and Angelique Stevens offer personal essays. These and more poems, stories, and essays are offered in memory of longtime NER contributor Francis-Noël Thomas (1943–2019).

NER has hosted several events this summer. In early June, the literary quarterly presented a gathering of alumni and faculty authors at Middlebury College’s Reunion, featuring Sam Collier ’09, Dede Cummings ’79, Meghan Laslocky ’89, Emilie Trice ’04, and Karin Gottshall, assistant professor of English and American literatures. Also in June, NER presented fiction writers David Huddle and Gregory Spatz in a joint reading at the Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury to help kick off the publication of their new books.

Samples of the new issue of NER and more information about the magazine, its podcast, and events can be found on the NER website (www.nereview.com). Subscriptions are available online at www.nereview.com/subscribe.
