Updated Statement Regarding Middlebury College Alumnus Kevin Mahaney

Following the plaintiff's decision to drop all claims against Kevin Mahaney, Middlebury released the following statement on March 19, 2018.

On March 19, 2018, the plaintiff in the civil lawsuit referenced below voluntarily dropped all claims against Kevin Mahaney. This action to discontinue the lawsuit against Mr. Mahaney was accompanied by a statement from the plaintiff stating, in part, “I now realize my decision to include Kevin in the lawsuit was a mistake and that he bears no responsibility for what happened to me. Kevin played no role in the attack, assisted me in its immediate aftermath, and continued supporting me for months thereafter.”

In response to an inquiry from the student newspaper, Middlebury released the following statement on March 7, 2018.

Middlebury is aware of accusations made against an alumnus of the College, Kevin Mahaney, Class of 1984, in a civil lawsuit filed in New York City in early January. Mr. Mahaney has denied the accusations in their entirety. Middlebury is committed to fairness for every person, which includes ensuring that people have the opportunity as a matter of due process to respond to allegations made against them. Middlebury strives to reduce sexual violence within its community and responds to all allegations made under its policies. Middlebury will continue to monitor this case closely.
