Uricaru Receives Major Grant for Film Project

June 10, 2016

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Ioana Uricaru, assistant professor of film and media culture, has received a major prize from the Romanian National Film Center’s annual production support competition. Uricaru will receive €656,000 (approx. $742,000) – the largest award among the 56 film projects funded – for her film Lemonade, which is currently in development, and will be produced by Cristian Mungiu’s Mobra Films.

This is the second significant grant Uricaru has received recently. Earlier this year, she was awarded the Berlin Prize, a highly competitive fellowship for filmmakers, which she will begin this fall.

Mobra Films gives the following synopsis of Lemonade: Mara, a 30-year old Romanian woman has recently moved to the US with Dragoş, her 9 year old son, after marrying Daniel, an American construction worker whom she has only met a few months ago. The film follows her through a series of revealing encounters during one day.
