The Miller Street Academy: Hope on a Tightrope in Newark’s South Ward

In Newark’s South Ward, urban decay is paramount. Life here hangs by a thread. From the eyes of school children and their families, I examine life in the South Ward – the challenges to survival and the struggle to protect children. The project describes lives on the border of normalcy. As an outgrowth of this project, 30 Middlebury Students are involved in the Jose Hernandez Collaborative. This is a school in Newark’s North Ward. Our Midd students have volunteered to tutor and mentor 30 Hernandez 7th Graders online. We have a website up and running:
