New Student Registration
Fall Semester Registration
Course preference selection for fall semester will take place between July 15 and August 15. Incoming students will be asked to select courses from a list of courses available to first-year students. At the end of the course preference selection process, students will be placed in a full schedule of courses before their arrival on campus. Much like the First Year Seminar selection process, this will not be a first-come first-served process. Students will be placed in courses based on availability and scheduling parameters.
First Year Spring 2025 Course Preference Selection FAQs
Where do I enter my course preferences?
Go to go.middlebury.edu/fyreg and log in using your Middlebury username and password. We suggest using a computer rather than a smartphone.
How do I go back to the instruction page?
In the Browse Courses pick list box, scroll to the top and click on * Select course *
I took a placement exam. How do I know which course to register for?
You should have received an email from the department chair or coordinator with guidance on your placement. If you have completed a placement exam and have not heard from the department, please email the department chair directly using the contact information on the Placement Exam website.
I missed the placement exam in my subject area. How can I register?
Please email the department chair directly using the contact information on the Placement Exam website. You may want to select an alternate course on your list for now.
Can I submit my course preferences on my phone or does it have to be done a computer?
For best results, please use a computer to make your course preference list.
Can I take a College Writing course?
No. Your First Year Seminar is a College Writing course and you can only take 1 College Writing course in your first semester.
Can I take 2 courses in the same department?
No. You can add two courses in the same department to your list, however, per College policy, you will only be placed in a maximum of one course in a single department.
What do the color codes mean?
- White (no background) indicates a course with no listed prerequisites; note that even if a course is numbered in the 200’s or 300’s, if it has no prerequisites, it is open to you!
- Green ☆ indicates a course for which you meet prerequisites.
- ⚠ Yellow indicates a course with prerequisites that our records don’t show you meeting. You can add such a course to your list, but you will not be placed in a course with pre-reqs unless you meet the prerequisites or have received an override.
Why don’t I see a course in go/fyreg?
Only courses open to first-year students appear on the course preference selection list. In addition, courses that are full (aka have no seats available) do not appear on the list, nor do courses that cannot be scheduled due to a time conflict with your first-year seminar.
Can I add more than 15 courses to my list?
Yes, you can add up to 20 courses to your list.
Do I have to add 15 courses to my list? What happens if I list fewer than 15 courses?
You must add at least 15 courses to your list so that you can be assigned to a full schedule. Listing fewer than 15 courses could limit the possibility of getting into 3 courses.
Can you change the order of courses on my list?
No. Students have the full course preference selection window to build their list, including positioning courses within the list. Once the window closes, no changes can be made.
Can I choose the time (or instructor) of the course on my list?
No. You will be placed in sections that best fit your schedule, space permitting. For example, if you are interested in taking Introduction to Psychology, you will add PSYC 0105 to your list (not PSYC 0105 A, PSYC 0105 B, PSYC 0105 C, etc).
Do you have my AP or IB scores on file?
At Middlebury, students may use pre-college test scores for course placement purposes. Middlebury does not award academic credit for pre-college tests. Students who requested their test scores be sent to Middlebury will receive an email from the Registrar’s Office before Orientation confirming the scores we received. If you have questions about whether Middlebury received your scores, or if you do not receive an email from the Registrar’s Office before your arrival on campus, contact us at registrar@middlebury.edu.
I added courses to my list but why are they no longer appearing?
Be sure to click Save each time you add new courses to your list.
Can I register for PE?
Yes. PE courses can be added during the add/drop period. You will receive an email with details for add/drop once you arrive on campus. Keep in mind, PE courses are not academic, credit-bearing courses.
