Inventory of Student Surveys

Each year Middlebury administers surveys to groups of students. Here is a schedule of past and planned surveys. 

Results from these student surveys help inform the administration, faculty, and staff about key issues.  Here is an example of the types of issues studied  with details on where these particular issues are addressed in individual surveys given to students.   To view the actual survey tools, please click on the titles below.

 

First Year Student Survey

CIRP 08, CIRP 09, CIRP 10, CIRP 11: Cooperative Institutional Research Program First Year Student Survey (given every year)

General information in the CIRP survey includes questions about high school experiences; college choice; plans for financing college; social attitudes and beliefs; academic skills self-ratings; plans while in college such as intended major and activities the student may be involved in; and parental income, education, and occupation.

Senior Surveys

Current Senior Surveys:

Senior Survey Part II:  This survey has been given in spring 2011.  General information in this survey includes details about post-graduation plans as well as co-curricular experiences.

COFHE 10:  Senior Survey Part 1 has been given in spring 2010 as part of the NECASL consortium collection.

Senior Survey Part II:  This survey has been given in spring 2010.  General information in this survey includes details about post-graduation plans as well as co-curricular experiences while at Middlebury.

Previous Senior Surveys:

CSS 08, CSS 09: Continuing Student Survey  General information in the CSS survey includes questions about college experiences in terms of satisfaction with various aspects of college; participation in different activities; social attitudes and beliefs; academic skills self-ratings; future plans such as further education, and intended occupation.

CSO 08, CSO 09: Middlebury’s Career Services Organization senior survey was given annually through 2009. General information in the CSO Senior Survey includes postgraduation plans.

Senior Supplement 08, Senior Supplement 09: Middlebury’s survey of co-curricular involvements was given annually through 2009.  General information in the senior supplement survey includes questions regarding college participation in academic projects, collaborative research, internships, community service, and service learning courses and activities.

NSSE: National Survey of Student Engagement

NSSE 2006: National Survey of Student Engagement (Spring 2006)

NSSE 2008: National Survey of Student Engagement (Spring 2008) 

NSSE 2011:  National Survey of Student Engagement (Spring 2011)

General information in the NSSE surveys include questions about the current school year in terms of participation in different academic activities; details about what coursework has emphasized; ratings of the amount and challenge of coursework; ratings of time spent in various aspects of coursework; participation and plans for different student life activities; characterization of the quality of relationships at college; and rating what the institution emphasizes.

NECASL Consortium Surveys

  • The Sophomore Survey includes questions around advising and assistance; choice of major and intended career; challenge in coursework; interest in academic areas; skills self-assessment; participation in different academic activities; plans for research activities; and participation and feelings about different aspects of student life.  This survey was given in both the fall of 2007 and the fall of 2008. 
  • The Junior Surveys include questions around majors, studying abroad, staying on campus, faculty interactions, and life outside the classroom. The set of Junior Surveys was given in spring 2009 and only Junior On Campus was given in spring 2010.
  • The Senior Survey includes questions about satisfaction with the quality of student academic experiences, campus life, services, and facilities as well as assessment of growth across various areas, such as writing effectively, aquiring knowlegde, and understanding issues.   This Senior Survey has been given in spring 2010.
