Faculty Grants 2007-2008

During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, Middlebury College and individual faculty members were awarded over $1.7 million, a total of 40 grants and fellowships to support research and other scholarly activities of 30 faculty members. Faculty efforts also led to a prestigious grant from the Beckman Foundation that funds research awards for exceptional students in the chemical and biological sciences. In addition, Middlebury benefited once again from the Faculty Career Enhancement Initiative grant made by the Mellon Foundation to a cluster of eight liberal arts colleges including Middlebury; this past year, nine Middlebury faculty members participated in group projects that were initiated by faculty at other schools.

At least 63 faculty members (more than 20%) submitted grant proposals: altogether, more than 123 proposals. Faculty from 16 departments and programs received grants. The grants provide funding for 56 student-faculty collaborations during the next few years as well as travel to research sites and conferences around the world, research supplies, publication costs, curriculum development, and other project expenses. Six faculty grants include funding for major scientific equipment. Twenty-three of the grants provide some support for faculty leaves. Fifteen faculty members who were on leave in 2007-2008 were supported in part by grants received during this past or prior years for research at Middlebury, elsewhere the United States, and internaitonally. And grants received this past year will support 11 faculty members who will be on leave in 2008-2009 (or future years), doing research at Middlebury and around the world.

Copies of the full report are available to Middlebury faculty and staff from the Sponsored Research Office by email.  Contact Franci Farnsworth (x5889) for more information.
