Software on Public Computers

All public computers on campus have a core set of applications on them. This set of software is different for PC and Mac machines. To see the software publicly available, click on the appropriate machine type below. If you don't see the program you want to use, see if it's available in a public computer lab in the table below.

Mac Software Applications (click to show listing)

  • Adobe: Flash Player, Shockwave.
  • Artstor, Audacity.
  • Blender.
  • Google Earth
  • iLife 09 (iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto), iTunes and QuickTime.
  • Microsoft Office 2011 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with Proofing tools for these languages
  • MPEG Streamclip.
  • Second Life

PC Software Applications (click to show listing)

The following software applications are installed on all Middlebury College LIS imaged public lab/classroom computers as part of our standard computer image.  (Note: There may exist 'specialty' labs that may not contain all of these applications but that is usually by request or design. -- ie. a specialized faculty research computer lab).

The applications listed below were requested via the Software Survey and have been installed in all labs as a part of the standard computer lab image (software installation location was specified as 'all labs' and/or 'all pubic computers).  Note that these applications are not part of your general LIS computer image (which is also used for faculty & staff computers) and should be requested in subsequent Software Surveys.

Language Support Software

All of our public computing facilities offer the ability to type in any of the languages taught at Middlebury and MIIS (http://go.middlebury.edu/ls).

Microsoft Office for Windows PCs provides spellcheck and grammar support for any of the languages taught at Middlebury and MIIS (http://go.middlebury.edu/ls).

Microsoft Office for Mac provides spellcheck and grammar support for the following languages: Office 2010 Supported Languages

Specialized Software

Some of the public computers on campus have special software that may be needed for coursework or other uses. The table below lists the additional applications that are available for public use, as well as where they can be found (building codes: AXN—Axinn Center; LIB—Davis Family Library; MBH—McCardell Bicentennial Hall; MNR—Munroe Hall; SDL—Sunderland Language Center).

Note: The software listed here (as well as the exact versions) are subject to change every semester. The changes are done in accordance with requests from faculty, license availability and system requirements set by the vendor of the software. Please contact the Helpdesk if you have any questions.
